Justice Served: Limpopo Court Sentences Man to 20 Years for Girlfriend’s Murder
A tragic case of gender-based violence has ended with a strong court ruling, bringing some measure of justice to a grieving family in Limpopo.
The Polokwane High Court has sentenced Nathaniel Molatelo Mokgehle 47years from Sekonye Village in Botlokwa to 20 years of direct imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Mokgadi Julia Mohlaela (41).
The heartbreaking incident happened on 8 June 2025, after Mohlaela had reportedly ended the relationship. According to reports presented in court, family members described the relationship as toxic, and Mohlaela had previously opened a case of malicious damage to property against Mokgehle. At the time of the attack, he was out on bail for that case.
On the day of the incident, Mokgehle allegedly went to Mohlaela’s mother’s home carrying a knife. When Mohlaela realized the danger, she attempted to run away. Tragically, she was chased and stabbed multiple times. Emergency services were called to the scene, but she sadly did not survive her injuries.
The trial began in the Polokwane High Court on 2 March 2026. After hearing the evidence, the court found Mokgehle guilty and handed down a 20-year prison sentence for murder, along with an additional six months for malicious damage to property. The sentences will run concurrently.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the investigating officer and the prosecution team for their work in bringing the case to justice. She also emphasized that violence against women remains a serious concern and that perpetrators will continue to face the full consequences of the law.
This case has once again highlighted the devastating impact of gender-based violence in South Africa. Advocacy groups continue to call for stronger prevention, earlier intervention in abusive relationships, and more support for victims who try to leave dangerous situations.
For many people following the case, the sentence represents accountability — but also a reminder of how important it is to protect and support those at risk before violence escalates into tragedy.
If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, reaching out to trusted family members, community organizations, or support services can be an important step toward safety.
