Justice for AKA? Murder Trial Stalls as Delays Frustrate Fans and Family
Over two years after the shocking assassination of South African rap icon Kiernan Forbes well known by his stage name AKA and his longtime friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, the journey to justice remains frustratingly slow.
Both men were gunned down in February 2023 outside a Durban restaurant in a carefully coordinated hit that stunned the nation. Despite the arrest of multiple suspects and a high profile investigation, the case has yet to reach the courtroom in full force.
Now, in August 2025, the case is still stuck in pre-trial proceedings. A hearing earlier in July revealed that the prosecution was not ready for trial with crucial witness lists and statements still incomplete. Judge Jacqueline Henriques expressed disappointment at the delay, pushing the matter to 13 August 2025, when a joint memorandum from both parties is expected.
The state has indicated that if all goes according to plan, the trial could finally begin in mid 2026, with tentative sessions scheduled for July and October. However, the judge has warned that further delays will not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, fans and family are growing restless. The #JusticeForAKA hashtag continues to trend as South Africans call for closure and accountability in one of the country's most high-profile murder cases.
Is justice on the horizon or is this just another cold case in the making? The next court appearance may offer some answers.
